This March, Oakham Book Swap will be supporting the UK's leading end of life charity, Marie Curie.
Symbolised by the March daffodil, the UK-based cancer charity will be supported by Oakham Book Swap this month. The local volunteer and book sharing group will collect donations at their monthly event and regular book swap stall on Oakham's Tyne Road.
Oakham Book Swap is a community-led project that hosts a pop-up book swap box on Tyne Road, Oakham. Residents are invited to pick up a new book or drop off unwanted books to share with other readers.
The swap contains fiction and non-fiction books for anyone aged 3 - 93, and is open to all. It opens when the weather permits and the team host regular 'Book Swap' events to raise much-needed funds for local and national charities.
The book swap team shared the news on their social media that, this March, they will be supporting Marie Curie: "Welcome to March! The daffodils are starting to bloom and we're delighted to be supporting the Marie Curie UK Great Daffodil Appeal throughout March."
"Marie Curie is a special charity to our family as we had the gentle, thoughtful care at home and support of Marie Curie nurses during my Dad's final days in 2018, and we know of many local families who have also been supported by them at devastating times."
At their event on the 12 March, the Big Book Swap Supporting Marie Curie, the team will be taking donations and arranging a small raffle to help raise funds and awareness.
On top of this, founder of Oakham Book Swap, Lisa Batty, will also be taking on the challenge of 10,000 steps a day.
Lisa said: "As a desk-based worker I rarely make it to 4,000 steps a day so it really is quite a challenge for me!
"Thanks again for all your support and book swaps, here's to a marvellous March!"
Marie Curie is the UK's leading end of life charity. They provide frontline nursing and hospice care, a free support line and a wealth of information and support on all aspects of dying, death and bereavement.
Last month, the group supported Prickleback Urchin Hedgehog rescue, a hedgehog rescue centre based in Market Overton and run by local couple, Rachel and Jay.
Throughout the year they raise money for 12 different charities, and take recommendations on their Facebook page for which charities local people feel deserve their support.
