Oakham Castle has been recognised for the quality of its educational services with the 2019 Sandford Award.

The castle, run by Rutland County Council, picked up the prestigious prize last month at a special presentation at The Museum of Childhood in London.

The independently-judged Sandford Award acknowledges and promotes quality and best practice in educational provision by attractions across Britain and offers a quality assured assessment of a site's formal education programme.

Oakham Castle offers a wide range of educational services including half and full-day school visits, outreach and special needs education sessions.

Developed with the help of a grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to Rutland County Council in 2016, the Castle's education programme covers a range of themes, including Introduction to Castle Life, Saxons, Vikings, and Crime and Punishment throughout the ages.

Sandford Award Judge Chris Green said: "The education programme at Oakham Castle provides outstanding opportunities for school groups to enhance their lessons through imaginative activities.

"The driving force behind this education programme is that history should be felt, and it is!"

Chris Traill, Strategic Director for Places at Rutland County Council, said: "We're delighted to have received this kite mark for educational and learning activities at Oakham Castle.

"Winning this nationally recognised award is a fantastic achievement that acknowledges the hard work of the talented team of volunteers and staff at the castle.

"We've developed a diverse programme that brings the history of this incredible building to life through role-play, hands on experiences and active learning.

"If you're looking for a fun, immersive day out with an award-winning education provider, we'd urge you to get in touch."

Since receiving funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund Oakham Castle has welcomed more than 3,000 children from schools both inside and outside Rutland.
