Oakham: Discover Rutland moves to help hospitality firms hit by skills crisis

Hospitality vacancies in Rutland will now be listed in one place, thanks to a new initiative from Discover Rutland.

The tourism body, which promotes the area both locally, nationally and internationally, has created a new careers page on its website in response to an industry-wide shortage of workers following the Covid-19 pandemic.

Not only does the page highlight the benefits of working in the tourism industry in the county, it also lists available jobs at nationally-renowned businesses such as The Olive Branch in Clipsham, The Good Pub Guide's Pub of the Year 2021.

Co-owner, Ben Jones recently highlighted the impact the shortage of chefs was having on the business by announcing they would be closing on Sundays, as well as Mondays and Tuesdays in June and July.

In a letter to customers, Ben recently wrote: "We've never been busier. But we've never been in more need of staff, either. Our small team is under immense strain – they're working heroically to meet incredible demands. But no one can keep up such a workload indefinitely. It's not sustainable and leads to burn-out, unhappiness and poor mental health.

"Therefore, we've decided to temporarily close on Sundays through June and July to give our team a longer break and to give us time to recruit. It's the only option we currently have to redress the balance."

The new page on the Discover Rutland website lists reasons why a career in hospitality is a wonderful option, such as flexibility, creativity and outside the 9 – 5.

It then lists all available positions in the county from its members, including Greetham Valley, Barnsdale Lodge and Welland Vale Garden Centre in Uppingham.

Discover Rutland chairman, Jason Allen, who owns The Fox in North Luffenham said: "There is a huge gap in the hospitality industry in the wake of Brexit and Covid-19 which has meant skilled and talented team members are either no longer available or no longer wanting to continue with their chosen careers.

"Working within the hospitality industry has so many perks – from the friendly atmosphere of working front of house to the creativity of chefs who focus on using locally sourced and fresh produce. And the best part is, there are many entry level opportunities out there at the moment which are perfect for those wanting a career change or to start out in the industry. Working in hospitality will give you key skills for life."
