Oakham: Fresh bid to review controversial housing scheme comes to nothing
A fresh bid to review a controversial planning decision that led to a county council by-election, which the ruling Conservatives lost to the Liberal Democrats, has come to nothing.
In July, Rutland County Council's Planning Committee voted to grant planning permission for a development of 62 homes on land off Braunston Road- a decision greeted with 'disgust' by campaigners.
It led Coun Nick Woodley to resign from the county council and Paul Browne winning the subsequent Oakham South by-election, as previously reported by Nub News.
A subsequent and unrelated decision by the Full Council to withdraw Rutland's Submitted Local Plan from independent examination prompted the Chairman of the Planning Committee (Coun Edward Baines: Con- Braunston & Martinsthorpe ) to request that planning approval for the Braunston Road development be bought back to the committee for reconsideration, if this was lawful and possible.
It led the planning application to temporarily appear on the agenda for the next planning committee, with Oakham Town Council also being given a further chance to comment on the matter.
However, a council statement said: "Having sought further legal advice on this matter, the Committee has been formally notified that the Braunston Road application cannot lawfully be reconsidered."
It further explained: " The need for this site remains, to deliver housing to help meet the requirement for a five-year housing land supply as required by the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF)
"The site's suitability was demonstrated by both the evidence base for Rutland's Submitted Local Plan and in the assessment of the planning application
"As a result, the decision to grant planning permission for the Braunston Road development will not be reconsidered and the item has been withdrawn from Planning Committee on Monday 4 October 2021."
