Oakham in history: historic attractions you can visit

Want to learn more about Oakham's history this summer? Read on to find out about a range of family friendly, free locations you can visit around Oakham to learn about the tiny but fascinating county.

Learn all about Oakham's history with a visit to Rutland County Museum.

Find the museum on Catmos Street

Rutland County Museum has a range of displays and exhibits, including:

  • Archaeology
  • Rural trades and rural life including...
  • Brewery, Wheelwrighting, Blacksmithing, and an impressive range of agricultural exhibits
  • Crime and punishment, including the only surviving New Drop Gallows in England
  • The Brooke Reliquary
  • and more!

The team also host regular and Special Exhibitions, showcasing the best art, history, and crafts that Oakham has to offer.

The museum is open Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10am – 4pm.

Entry is free but donations are accepted.

Oakham Castle and All Saints' Church in the background. All Saints' Church is also a fascinating historic building.

Residents and visitors to Oakham can also head to Oakham Castle to soak up some local history.

Oakham Castle visitors can see the old castle walls and ruins, and the great hall, 'England's Most Complete Norman Great Hall.'

Inside the hall are a range of horseshoes, donated by royalty and nobility from across the country.

The great hall is open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am - 4pm, excluding when it is closed for weddings.

It also frequently plays host to a range of local events and markets.

Entry is free but donations are accepted.

Visitors can also see the plaque outside Jeffery Hudson's Cottage by heading from the Castle towards the level crossing.

Another plaque in town is the Ruddle's Brewery time capsule plaque. This is located in the grounds of the Rutland County Council buildings.
