After much speculation on social media, Oakham Mayor, Sally-Anne Wadsworth, has explained why there will be no Christmas light switch on around the tree in Oakham this year.

The tree, which went up in the first weekend of November, will have its lights switched on on Saturday the 4th of December, the same day that the Cutts Close Christmas Extravaganza will take place.

Because of this, the decision has been made to switch the lights on during the day, but with minimal fuss.

Sally-Anne shared: "There seems to be a lot of talk about The Christmas Tree switch on. Just to clarify, Oakham Town Council is made up of volunteers and with our Christmas Extravaganza at Cutts Close on the 4th December it would be difficult to run both events.

"The tree will be switched on on the 4th December, but will not be a big event around the tree as that will all be happening in Cutts Close. There will be a singer, craft stalls, kiddie rides, chestnut and mulled wine [at Cutts Close]. Please do join us."

The Christmas Extravaganza will take place at Cutts Close, is open to all, and will include festive nibbles, drinks and more.

The event will begin at noon and continue until around 4pm, from when local pubs, cafés and restaurants will be open for couples, families and other visitors to purchase food and enjoy the festivities.

See our What's On page for more festive events, or share your own by clicking the 'Nub It' button at the top of the page.
