Fast-food giant McDonald's has confirmed today (Tues) that its Oakham drive-thru restaurant will open in just a few months' time.

A spokesperson told Oakham Nub News: "Construction work has started.

"There is no set opening date just yet, but it will be Autumn 2020."

The new McDonald's restaurant, on land at Hawkesmead Business Estate off Lands End Way, will create 65 full and part-time new jobs.

Plans for the fast-food outlet in England's only county currently without the golden arches were given the green light in January this year by Rutland County Council's planning and licensing committee.

The committee voted eight in favour of the application, with one member abstaining.

Martin Cuthbert, a McDonald's franchisee with 11 restaurants in the East Midlands, told the meeting he hoped to take on the Oakham franchise.
