Police are treating a case of criminal damage in Oakham as a 'crime.'

Leicestershire Police say that in Long Row, "offensive words were painted on a wall."

A spokesman said: "This offence is being treated as a hate crime."

A second incident has seen play equipment in the playground on Irwell Close vandalised using paint.

Both incidents took place between Tuesday (7 Apr) and Wednesday (8 Apr).

The police spokesman said the local authority have been informed and will be removing the paint damage.

Enquiries have been conducted by local officers. If anyone has any information about those responsible please call 101.

The playground incident has led one mother to contact Oakham Nub News to say children are becoming distressed enough by not being able to play in local parks and then this happens.

She calls on parents to ensure their children do not go out with cans of spray paint when they leave the house for their 'daily exercise.' Children must also be told of the impact such 'tagging' can have on others.
