Oakham has been named as one of the '10 best places for a UK weekend break.'

The title has been given by The Independent, a former national newspaper, which is now online only.

Journalist Teresa Machan says it is 'time to reconnect with Britain' as she chooses a variety of venues.

She wrote: "The unsung market town of Oakham in the East Midlands is a great base for an active family break."

Highlighted attractions include Rutland Water Nature Reserve, the Rutland Water Sports Centre, Rocks by Rail and Fineshade Wood.

The Wisteria Hotel in Oakham is recommended as a place to stay.

The accolade for Oakham follows it being recommended as a commuter town by the Times newspaper.
