Oakham: Rutland Kino reassures critics and town over changes proposed for Victoria Hall

By The Editor 27th Sep 2021

The people behind the controversial Rutland Kino cinema project in Oakham report growing support for their scheme following a charm offensive.

Their plans for a two-screen cinema in the historic Victoria Hall has been recommended for refusal by Oakham Town Town Council, as recently reported by Nub News.

Earlier this month, Nub News also reported opposition from people who have been placing their comments on the Rutland Council website as part of the planning process.

However, since then, the people behind the scheme have hit back with a series of blog posts on their website , highlighting who they are, what films they will show, how their plans affect the historic and how it can still be used by community groups and others.

Genevieve Margrett, who with Andrew Robinson, seek to build the £2M complex told Nub News that that recent campaigning efforts have gone well with the latest comments and submissions on the county council website now 3-1 in their favour.

Genevieve told Nub News: "We just noted there was too much misinformation out there, so we wrote the blog posts to let people make up their own minds."

The posts explained the films that would be shown, how the building used with its sensitive features retained, Genevieve continued.

"It's been working. People who are not for something will have their concerns and express them and those who like something will like to sit back. It's human nature. But we wanted people to make Rutland County Council aware there is a real appetite in the community for something like this."

"People have done that and that is gratifying and it is now 3-1 for, rather than against."

Genevieve says the fundraising continues well, though more financial investors are still needed. Earlier this month, Rutland Kino announced it was halfway in meeting its £2M fundraising target.

She added: "We are awaiting a planning decision in October."
