Oakham: Rutland MP Alicia Kearns slams proposed boundary changes

By The Editor   29th Jul 2021

Rutland MP Alicia Kearns has slammed proposed electoral boundary changes that would cut her constituency into pieces.

Her attack of the proposals from the Boundary Commission comes as the deadline for public comments approaches.

The proposals, published in June, recommended Rutland be split off from the MP's current Rutland and Melton constituency, and be lumped in with Stamford and the Deepings. The existing Grantham and Stamford constituency, currently represented by Gareth Davies, another Conservative, would be split in two.

Mrs Kearns accepted how the Boundary Commission changes constituencies so they are of a similar size, but their current proposals were not in the best interests of Rutlanders, she said.

The MP continued: "Before the proposals were published, I was clear that any changes must protect and enhance services and representation for residents of Rutland, Melton, the Vale and the Harborough villages. I have listened to many stakeholders locally and my [Conservative Party] Association and we do not believe that the proposals do this.

"The argument for the proposed divorce of Rutland from Leicestershire pertains to mathematical imperatives for the wider region formulated by the Commission – the need for Lincolnshire seats to be re-drawn due to their size and number of residents. Not what would be best for Rutlanders, Meltonians, or residents of the Vale or Harborough villages.

She added: "The root of my objections to the Boundary Commission's proposals is the impact they would have on provision of services, but also community organisations. The new proposals cleave in half existing relationships, agreements and service provision boundaries.

"They do not give residents of Rutland and Melton the best representation by their Member of Parliament and would prevent Rutland and Melton from receiving the same kind of constituency representation we currently receive from local service provision."

Rutland County Council decided to make no formal comment on the proposals, as reported by Nub News.

In Stamford, the proposals led to support from some for it to leave Lincolnshire and become part of a larger Rutland council, as also reported.

Details of the proposals and how to comment by the August 2 deadline for public comments can be found here.
