Oakham scores low on 'Best Places to Live 2024' list

Oakham has been ranked in the bottom 50 per cent of 1,429 towns, cities and villages in England and Wales.

Property finder company Garrington has published its 2024 marketing report for England and Wales.

The report ranks the 1,429 towns, cities and villages on measures covering five categories, with Oakham coming in at 940.

Of all the categories, Oakham ranks highest for its house prices (which may be surprising to residents) and wellbeing respectively soaring 411 and 145.

The five categories include:

  • natural environment
  • wellbeing
  • heritage/culture
  • schools
  • employment and connectivity
  • house price quality and value

Where does Oakham rank in the 2024 Garrington report?

Out of the 1,429 places, Oakham has been ranked 940 overall.

Of all the categories, Oakham ranks highest for its house prices and wellbeing. The town fares worst for its schooling, employability and connectivity, ranking at 1,327.

Heritage and culture is ranked at 1,023 and natural environment sits at 1,061.

According to Garrington, the average family home cost in Oakham is £454,211, with an average sales price increase of 6.9 per cent in the last year - high compared to other locations across the country.

Where do other locations around Rutland place in the list?

  • Stamford is ranked at 269 overall, with house price and quality scoring best at 287.
  • Melton Mowbray sits very low on the list, coming in at 1,198 out of over 1,400, the natural environment letting the area down at 1,363.
  • Corby is also low down on the list, ranked at 1,115. Average house prices in the area are £368,880, seeing an increase of only 0.1 per cent.
