Charities that date back centuries are looking for young Rutlanders undertaking studies and training to give them a financial boost.

Oakham United Charities has posted on Facebook that it is seeking people aged 16-22 that are going on an apprenticeship, undertaking vocational training or on a university course.

Such people are encouraged to apply for a grant for books/ equipment worth up to £100.

Oakham United Charities is a small group of independent charities dating back centuries.

Two of these, the Charity of Henry Forster (founded in 1692) and the Rutland Society of Industry (founded in 1785), were set up to offer financial assistance to young people preparing for an occupation or trade to enable them to earn their own living.

Even though today the annual income, and thus the grant aid, from the charitable funds is not large by current standards.

By continuing to help people in Oakham and Rutland, the Trustees say they are keeping faith with the charitable intentions of those who cared for our community and who established funds in order to provide for the needs of future citizens.

Today, the Charities offer small grants to students undertaking apprenticeships, vocational training or university courses to assist with the purchase of books and equipment.

As a Registered Charity, the way in which they operate is governed by the Charity Commission.

The Charity of Henry Forster offers grants to students living in the Parishes of Oakham, Barleythorpe and Gunthorpe.

The Rutland Society of Industry offers grants to students living within the County of Rutland.

Further details and how to apply can be found here.
