Oakham Town Council submits Town of Culture bid

Bosses have submitted Oakham's bid to be named the UK Town of Culture – putting history and food at the centre of their plans.
The expression of interest sets out a vision for a year-round programme of festivals and events that would celebrate the town's unique heritage, creating opportunities for residents, young people and local businesses.
The plan proposes six cultural themes – Natural, Historical, Culinary, Musical, Lyrical and Creative.
Events held in 2028 would aim to shine a light on the richness of Oakham and Rutland's culture and heritage, while supporting a reinvigorated town centre and improved cultural facilities.
Cllr Jonathan Nichols, who is leading the town of culture charge, said: "The UK Town of Culture opportunity would be transformational for Oakham.
"The town has a remarkable heritage and is bursting with creative talent, but sorely lacks the facilities to fully realise that talent.
"This bid is about celebrating what makes the town special while also creating new opportunities for local people, especially young people, to take part in culture, develop skills, and help shape Oakham's future."
Oakham Town Council last month approved a budget of £6,000 to prepare its initial application.
Shortlisted towns will receive £60,000 to put together a final bid. The winner will be named UK Town of Culture for 2028 – and be awarded £3.5million to put on a programme of events for the year.
The UK Town of Culture competition is a spin-off from the UK City of Culture, awarded every four years and, since 2017, going to Hull, Coventry and currently Bradford.
It was launched by the culture secretary Lisa Nandy, with applications to be judged on three main criteria: the town's unique story, how the town will design a cultural programme for all, and how it will be delivered successfully.
Council chiefs said Oakham's bid highlights its distinctive strengths, from its Anglo-Saxon, Roman and medieval heritage to its independent shops, local producers, artistic talent, military connections and community organisations.
Mayor of Oakham Chris Nix said: "This is a fantastic initiative for Oakham. The Town of Culture opportunity would create a legacy that will continue to benefit residents and visitors far beyond the programme year."
