Two members of the Oakham and District Twinning Association visited one of Oakham's twin towns, Barmstedt in Germany, earlier in the month.

Adam and Julie visited Barmstedt between 28th November and 1st December, coinciding with the Christmas market. They were able to see the traditional crafts on display and sample live entertainment and cuisine, as well as visiting a local church for a nativity and christening.

They also met internationally renowned Barmstedt artist Karin Weißenbacher in 'Gallery III' on the Palace island located in the Rantzauer Lake. In the 12th and 13th century this was the seat of the Knights from Barmstedt.

This was the final of four exchanges this year, with Julie and Adam finding the experience enjoyable and educational. The next opportunity will be in May 2025 when Barmstedt celebrates the 45th anniversary of its partnership with the French town of Roissy-en-Brie. The Barmstedt Association is inviting representatives from all its twin towns (Roissy, Oakham and District, and Middelfart in Denmark) to an international twinning weekend from 8th to 11th May.

For anyone interested in travelling to Barmstedt, anyone wanting to host when Barmstedt guests come to Oakham in the future or wanting to learn more about the Oakham and District Twinning Association, please contact Henry Dawe on 01572 823629 or at [email protected] for further details. Henry wants to reassure anyone interested that they need not be put off if they do not speak German – many members do not and have still formed close friendships with their exchange partners.
