Oakham is serving up some serious class this week, with a charity concert from Oakham School and Burns Night feasts galore!
On Friday the 21st of January at 7:30pm, Oakham School and Form 6 music scholar, Jan Seelig, present a special recital to help raise funds for Oakham School's annual Kenya project, in which he will be participating at half term. This long-running project supports primary schools in rural Kenya by helping to improve their classroom conditions, and gives Oakham pupils the opportunity to support the staff in teaching some lessons. This musical programme brings together solo piano repertoire and collaborative performances with Zsolti Johnson (flute) and Findlay Marsh ('cello). The school extend their thanks to All Saints' Church for kindly agreeing to host this recital. Tickets can be purchased from WeGotTickets.com and cost £5, plus a 50p booking fee. Doors open at 7pm, and visitors are invited to arrive early, find good seats, and enjoy the atmosphere.Held throughout the world on Burns Night (or on an evening close to it) a traditional Burns supper is an evening event that celebrates Robert Burns' life and work.
The first Burns supper was held in July 1801 when nine of Burns' close friends got together to mark the fifth anniversary of their friend's death. Taking place at Burns Cottage in Alloway, the night included a tasty meal (haggis, of course!), performances of Burns' work and a speech in honour of the great Bard.
The Grainstore Burns Night party will begin with the Selkirk Grace, followed by their Piper, piping in the haggis which is then served with tatties and neeps along with a whisky gravy and a shot of malt to wash it down! Once the haggis is consumed, Govannen will fire up their funky tunes and play the night away.
As usual, entry is free, but if you would like to dine please book your meal by calling the venue on: 01572770065. This will include haggis, tatties, neeps and a shot of whisky to wash it all down!
On Saturday the 22nd of January, Barnsdale Lodge are also hosting a Burns Night supper to celebrate the bard, Robert Burns.
The evening will cost £35 per person which includes a 4 course meal, a traditional pipe, readings of Robert Burn's poems and Ceilidh dancing to the folk band, Wagonload of Monkeys.
