While parking on the pavement has been prohibited in London since 1974, the ruling has yet to travel further than the city boundaries. This can see market towns like Oakham and Uppingham being inundated with vehicles that limit the use of public paths and pavements.

However the system is currently being reviewed by the Department of Transport, meaning that drivers may face a fine for parking on pavements and obstructing walkways.

This comes as part of a Government scheme to make pavements safer for all users, from pedestrians to cyclists.

The consultation ahead of this review received over 15,000 responses from local and national organisations, local authorities, and disability groups. This is a particularly poignant discussion for disabled pavement users, who can find their access completely blocked by pavement parking.

If passed, the fine for pavement parking could be up to £70.

In London, if this fine is paid within 14 days it is reduced significantly. This would likely also be the case if the ruling was extended into more rural areas.

Do you have issues with pavement parking on your street? Or will this ruling have a negative impact on you?
