Police update on break-in at Oakham Town Council
By Steve Thompson - Local Democracy Reporter 17th Mar 2026
It is not known if anything was stolen during a mysterious break-in at Oakham Town Council, police have confirmed.
Councillors were given a secret briefing on the incident at a meeting of the council last week at ROL House.
Police have now broken their silence on their investigation – and say they are continuing to investigate the "circumstances surrounding the incident".
It is understood officials believed someone had been accessing the council offices – and set up a webcam to monitor the situation.
Then following an "out-of-hours security breach" last month the incident was reported to the police.
A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: "An investigation is being carried out after a report of burglary at a premises in Long Row in Oakham.
"The incident is believed to have occurred on 19 February and reported the following day. It is not known whether anything was stolen during the incident.
"Enquiries are continuing into the report and the circumstances surrounding the incident."
The town clerk for Oakham Town Council Chris Evans said he could not comment on the incident.
Cllr Paul Ainsley, former Mayor, said: "We are taking this incident extremely seriously. The safety and wellbeing of our staff remains our highest priority, and immediate steps have been taken to reinforce security across our offices.
"The matter has been reported to the police, and we are working closely with them to support their enquiries."
In a further security concern, councillors were told last week that the council was targeted by fraudsters who tried to cash a fake cheque for £5,500.
The cheque was spotted by Lloyds Bank and no funds were lost from the council coffers. This matter has also been reported to police.
