Police have published pictures which show how a driver had a lucky escape after the cab of his HGV was 'mangled' in a crash with another lorry.

The incident on the A1 between Stretton and Tickencote in Rutland led to the dual-carriageway being closed for nearly 16 hours.

Officers from the Leicestershire Roads Policing Unit (RPU) published photographs of the crumpled lorry cab after the Tuesday lunchtime collision.

Police tweeted: "The driver of the mangled HGV suffered broken ribs only. Very lucky boy thankfully."

The driver was trapped in his vehicle and had to be extracted by a rescue team before being taken to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham.
