Plans put forward for new padel courts at Rutland Water Golf Course
By Steve Thompson - Local Democracy Reporter 28th Jan 2026
Two padel courts could be built if plans are given the green light.
The site is at Rutland Water Golf Club to the north of Manton Road, mid-way between Manton and Edith Weston, 580 metres to the south of Rutland Water.
The access road is shared with the 'Pick Your Own' Rutland Water Fruit Farm and leads to the main complex of buildings that form the golf club.
They include the Lodge Farm holiday cottage, a pro shop, clubhouse, bar and restaurant. The padel courts would be based next to the holiday cottage.
Padel is a racquet sport combining tennis and squash, which is played in doubles on a small, enclosed court where the walls are used as part of the game.
Planners say the new development would have a negligible impact on traffic and parking as only eight people would be able to use the courts at any one time.
The application, submitted by Matt Hubbard, of the Planning Hub, on behalf of the golf club, states there are already 160 parking spaces available.
Mr Hubbard said: "Padel is becoming the world's fastest growing sport as it is easy and fun to play, healthy, sociable, accessible and appeals to all age groups and abilities.
"More padel courts are appearing across the country, and are especially popular where they form an addition to an existing sporting venue and/or are closely linked to clubhouse facilities that have changing rooms, showers, toilets and cafeteria areas.
"Consent is sought to develop the application site with two padel courts, that would be covered, for year-round use.
"Not only will the covering assist with weather protection, but it will also help to disguise the courts within this rural setting.
"Furthermore, the structure will also contain lighting for the courts, eliminating any light spill on the surrounding area at the same time as maximizing the time that the courts can be used in the evenings and during the winter months."
The covering structure would have open sides up to four metres in height, to allow natural light on to the courts. The roof would be "profiled metal" and the side walls would be finished in timber cladding.
Mr Hubbard cited similar approved developments at the Woolfox Golf and Country Club and at Barnsdale Lodge in Exton.
While in December, proposals for two new courts at Burghley Park Golf Club, near Stamford, were given the go-ahead.
A consultation will take place in February before a final decision is taken by Rutland County Council.
