A local school has launched a brand new inflatable swimming session as the conversation around a lack of facilities for Oakham's youth continues.

Oakham School, which is home to one of the county's only swimming pools following the closure of Catmose Sports Centre's pool during the pandemic, has launched a new inflatable session for the youth of Oakham.

They shared on their social media: "Exciting news. We now have a weekly inflatable session open to all.

"This is taking place on Sundays 2.50pm to 3.45pm and is £6.00 per person. Pre-booking is recommended."

This comes after the pool at Catmose Sports Centre closed, leaving parents fearful that they had limited options to for children's swimming lessons, and angry that youth activities taking place in the county town of Rutland were not being improved following the loss of this facility.

Following this, Oakham Town Council voted against locating a skate park at Centenary Fields - a proposal which has not been revisited, despite a promise to do so by Oakham Town Council.

The rejection of this proposal prompted outcry from local parents, who claim that the town offers little for the youth growing up in Rutland.

Upon the closure of Wilko in September, residents suggested that the old retail building be turned into a youth space, swimming pool or affordable shopping hub.

However, the future of this building remains uncertain, and a youth centre seems a distant hope.

As such, the addition of an inflatable swimming session at Oakham School will come as a relief to many parents, who are desperate to find entertainment within the county for their youngsters.

Children of any age can attend, as long as they can swim a length, and children aged seven or under must be accompanied by an adult.

Residents can call 01572 758754 or visit the Oakham School Enterprises website for more details.
