A proposed medical facility would not be a GP surgery if approved, a council board has been told.

Jake Cooke, chief of strategy and partnerships at Patient Care Locally (PCL), the organisation behind the project, confirmed to the Rutland County Council Health and Wellbeing Board that the proposed Medi-Tech centre would not be a new GP surgery for the area, despite some communications suggesting so.

The £3.5m facility – planned for Oakham Enterprise Park – would instead offer a range of day case procedures, including minor surgeries such as carpal tunnel treatment and vasectomies. However, the existing list of planned services is "very fluid", the board heard, meaning more could be added in the future.

While supplementing other medical facilities in the area, like the Rutland Memorial Hospital and GP practices in Oakham, PCL emphasised its ambition for the building to also serve as a training centre.

"People are born in Rutland, they go to school in Rutland, then they go to university and they generally don't come back until their early 50s. What we want to do is develop the Medi-Tech centre as a training and development hub where we can train up the next generation of clinicians here," Mr Cooke said.

Medical research and development could take place on the site, with which universities in the region and beyond can get involved, according to PCL.

"We want to demonstrate to universities what the Medi-Tech centre is here to do," Mr Cooke continued.

"We want to give PHD research students space to run research for us, and right now we're working with universities like De Montfort University Leicester and the University of Nottingham while we create create stakeholder engagement."

Construction of the building is expected to start in October, with a provisional opening date of December 2027, pending approval of its planning application.

It would be funded by £3.5 million of Government Local Regeneration Fund investment.
