Record number of female glow worms found in quarry by Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust

Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust (LRWT) report a record number of female glow-worms in Ketton Quarry.
They counted 86 glowing females and eight males all in one place – the highest number of females found in any one site in Rutland.
Glow-worms, which are a type of beetle, have been thriving this year because of the very warm and wet conditions of last summer has created the perfect environment for snails, which are eaten by the glow worm larvae.

Glow worms can live up to two years as larvae, when they eat lots of snails and slugs, but only live for two weeks when they are in their adult form.
Tim Sexton from LRWT said that the number of glow-worms recorded in 2025 were 'much better' than in the previous five years.
Tim says that the glowing females are only visible from May to the end of July, saying: "Their amazing ability to emit light really inspires wonder and reminds us of the magic that's in the natural world that's worth protecting."
