Plans to put up a statue of the Queen have been resubmitted after controversy surrounding the original proposal.

An application for a stone plinth on which the statue of the late Queen Elizabeth II will be mounted has been submitted to Rutland County Council by Lord-Lieutenant Dr Sarah Furness.

The original application was submitted in June but was rejected due to objections about the location of the statue, among other objections raised by members of the public.

As such, a new application has been submitted, relocating the statue from the original proposed location outside the front of Oakham Library to land to the rear of the public facility.

Despite the initial rejection, the creation of the statue has already begun.

The plinth will be made of white limestone and will be carved with: "Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) Erected as a Tribute to Her Late Majesty through public subscription by the people of Rutland."

The seven-foot bronze statue, created by Hywel Pratley, will be on top of the five-foot tall plinth. A raised plinth in matching limestone will provide a mount for two Corgi statues and also provide a seat.

Around the base of the plinth, it is proposed that the names of supporters and benefactors who donated towards the statue will be inscribed.

It was first proposed that this state would cost £125,000.

Since the launch of the statue at an exclusive Oakham Castle event, and following backlash from local people about the expensive during the cost of living crisis, the figure has allegedly been reduced.

Although the statue has been mostly funded through private donations, Oakham Town Council have donated £5,000 to the project, and it appears that they will be the authority who will be in charge of the upkeep of the addition.
