A council has approved plans for a 213-house estate.

The development, which is planned for a field adjacent to Burley Road on the north-eastern edge of Oakham, was voted through unanimously by Rutland County Council's planning committee on Tuesday (21 July).

The committee heard that the houses were designed "with reference to Oakham", featuring similar façades and chimneys, although the latter would feature "just to fit in with local vernacular" and not to serve working fireplaces.

The designs were warmly received by the committee, with one councillor Steve McRobb (Labour) commenting that he "likes the look of them" and that he thought "they've been well done".

In addition to the houses, "extensive" green spaces are also planned for the estate, along with play areas and allotments.

The estate itself is due to envelop the large Co-op supermarket which already exists in Burley Road, while encircling Wilson Playing Fields of Oakham School to the west.

The houses will all feature air source heat pumps, according to Max Mossman, speaking on behalf of the applicant Mulberry Homes Ltd, but since sustainability requirements were met without the need for solar panels, they will not be included.

The planning permission granted is for 213 houses, although 10 of these have been designated "self-build" home plots, for which further permission will be required at a later stage.
