Rutland in mourning over death of Prince Philip
Rutland is in mourning following the sad death of The Duke of Edinburgh aged 99.
A spokesman for the Royal Family commented: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle.
"Further announcements will made in due course.
"The Royal Family join with people around the world in mourning his loss."
Oakham Town Council issued a statement from Mayor David Romney and wife Di Romney.
It said: "On behalf of Oakham Town Council, The Mayor and Mayoress Cllr David and Di Romney, it is with great sadness and a huge loss to the country, that we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to Her Majesty and the Royal family, you are forever in our thoughts."
Rutland County Council has promised a more detailed statement, but earlier today, it posted a fresh homepage on its website featuring Prince Philip with the comment: "It is with deep sadness that Rutland County Council marks the passing of His late Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"At this time of national mourning, this website has been changed out of respect and in accordance with protocol.
"While normal service delivery and Council functions continue, there are actions required of the County Council to ensure appropriate, proportionate and dignified arrangements are in place for the mourning period.
"An overview of these and information relating to flowers, flags and other forms of tribute will be available as soon as possible."
Rutland MP Alicia Kearns said: "Prince Philip devoted his life to serving the United Kingdom.
"From a naval cadet at Dartmouth, to his retirement as a working member of the Royal family in 2017, he lived a life that defined the very concept of service. From his years in the Royal Navy to the creation of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme, he leaves a legacy that goes far beyond the steadfast and evidently deeply felt companionship he provided to Her Majesty the Queen for over sixty years.
"My thoughts are very much with Her Majesty, and everyone in the Royal Family at this difficult and deeply sad time.
Chief Constable Simon Cole of Leicestershire Police said: "On behalf of all of the officers, staff and volunteers at Leicestershire Police I wish to express our condolences at the announcement of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"We have had the privilege of supporting visits' that he has made to the Force area on a number of occasions. The legacy for young people created by the Duke of Edinburgh's Awards will live on in his memory."
Leicestershire Chief Fire and Rescue Officer, Callum Faint, said: "I speak on behalf of Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service when I say we are all deeply saddened to hear of the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
"As a mark of respect, during the period of Royal mourning, the Union and Service Flags on all Service buildings will be flown at half-mast.
"Our sincere sympathy goes out to all members of the Royal family."
