Rutland has been names as the best local authority in the East Midlands and the top authority in England for children to grow up in.

A study by Oxford Home Schooling says this was mainly due to educational factors, with 34% of school places available – the best availability rate in the country – despite ranking eighth nationally for Ofsted ratings.

An impressive 95% of its schools were considered good or outstanding in their latest inspection.

Additionally, Rutland had the second lowest crime rate in the country, with only 41 crimes per 1,000 people.

Leicester was the lowest ranked authority in the region, and the third lowest in the country.

This was due to the city ranking poorly for crime, with 123 crimes per 1,000 people, and only 2% of school places available.

Oxford Home Schooling said other strong areas are Cumbria in the North West, Herefordshire in the West Midlands, as well as Stockton-on-Tees in the North East.

Dr Nick Smith, principal at Oxford Home Schooling, said: "2020 has been an incredibly difficult year for many families and some will be looking for a fresh start as we near its conclusion.

"Lots of people are moving house, in part due to the Stamp Duty holiday, and families will have a lot to consider when choosing their new area.

"Education will likely be a key factor, with some moving to be within certain school catchment areas. For those considering such action, our research has highlighted the local authorities which offer quality education, affordable housing and safety for your family."

The worst places meanwhile are Bristol in the South West, Enfield in London and Leicester in the East Midlands.
