Rutland has made a list of one of the most unaffordable places for first time housing buyers.

Research by the Nationwide Building Society places the county at number 5 for unaffordability in the UK, and the worst in the East Midlands.

The research measures house prices in relation to incomes and found an average home in England's smallest county cost 6.6 times the average income.

The most unaffordable area was Hammersmith and Fulham in London, with an average home costing 16.8 times the average salary.

The most affordable was East Ayrshire in Scotland where the average property cost 2.3 times the average income.

Overall, the research showed a growing gulf between the most and least affordable places to live within different regions of Britain is growing.
