Rutland MP Alicia Kearns wins radio game show

Rutland and Stamford MP Alicia Kearns has won an episode of Times Radio's It's a Constituency Knockout.
The weekly show pits two MPs against each other as they reveal quirky or unusual facts about their constituency. Whoever produces the most interesting trivia after three rounds – judged by the host – wins the episode.
Mrs Kearns found herself up against Ruth Jones, Labour MP for Newport West and Islwyn in South Wales. The MP for Rutland and Stamford got off to a good start with a winning explanation of the Rutland horseshoe tradition – a 500-year-old custom whereby visiting royals and peers offer horseshoes to the county, which are then stored upside down so as not to let the devil 'nest' within them.
However, Mrs Kearns' constituency claim to both Britain's smallest and largest men – 18in tall Jeffrey Hudson and 52st Daniel Lambert – was not enough to beat Mrs Jones' personal connection to Dr Rosa Morris, whose mathematical work contributed to the development of the iconic World War II fighter plane, the Supermarine Spitfire.
Coming down to the final round, Mrs Kearns sealed the win with an impressive revelation that the famous apple tree under which Sir Isaac Newton sat when he developed the theory of gravity is located in her constituency. "We are the home of modern-day science," Mrs Kearns remarked, "and most certainly of gravity."
Speaking about her appearance on the show, Mrs Kearns said: "Taking part in Constituency Knockout was a fun opportunity to share the quirks and curiosities that make our communities so special – the ones that are less well known outside our communities.
"We're the heart of England and we're full of history and character. I'll take any excuse to tell the country about it," she added.
"I couldn't have done it without the brilliant suggestions that came in on social media – this fun win belongs to all of us."
