Rutland MP backs police name change

By The Editor 18th Jun 2021

Rutland's MP Alicia Kearns is seeking a name change for the police in the area, to better reflect the county officers serve.

The MP is also calling for better targeted support to Rutland by creating Rutland as its own neighbourhood policing area.

Mrs Kearns has said on social media: "It's great that Leicestershire and Rutland share so many services – from healthcare to policing. It makes vital services better for those in both counties.

"But sometimes, Rutland is an afterthought and I think names matter.

"That's why I'm working with Rupert Matthews , our newly elected Police and Crime Commissioner for Leicestershire and Rutland, to rename Leicestershire Police to Leicestershire and Rutland Police but more importantly to create Rutland as its own Neighbourhood Policing Area.

"This is to reflect that our Police Force serves Rutland as much as it does Leicestershire."

She added: "For those asking about cost - there is no need for this to cost vast sums. As paper runs out you put replacement orders in with corrected letterheads, as police car decals require replacing (every 2 years roughly) you ensure the new decals have corrected title."
