Rutland MP Alicia Kearns is calling on Bauer Radio to protect local content and jobs at Rutland Radio.

The MP has written to its top bosses following last week's announcement that Bauer intended to change the name of the station to Greatest Hits Radio.

The move has led to fears in the county that the distinctive identity of the station will be lost, along with jobs and local content at the Oakham-based station.

A petition has already attracted hundreds of signatures opposing the rebranding of Radio Rutland.

Mrs Kearns said on twitter yesterday: "A year ago Bauer purchased @rutland_radio & has plans to re-brand it as Greatest Hits Radio.

"I've written imploring them to keep content local & to protect staff roles. I've also spoken to the Minister for Radio, Chair of DCMS Select Committee, & Chair of APPG for Media & Radio."

In a letter to Bauer's group managing director, radio, Dee Ford, the MP also says Rutland Radio is "a vital part of our community spirit and vibrant local life."

"It is also a heartbeat for Rutland and relied upon by residents. The strength of support locally for Rutland Radio is immense."

She continued: "I am writing to urge you to protect local programming. Rutland has built its strng sense of community through years of concerted effort.

"It is vital that any transition ensures that in the long term we retain local news and current affairs, traffic news, and as much local content as possible. I hope I can receive some assurances in this regard."
