The MP for Rutland and Melton has spoken out in favour of assisted dying.

Conservative MP Alicia Kearns, has voiced her support of assisted dying, which would give her constituents and residents across the country "the right to end their suffering".

Dying in Dignity is one of the key campaign groups also in support of allowing assisted dying in the UK. The group define assisted dying as a system that would "allow a dying person the choice to control their death if they decide their suffering is unbearable."

It is illegal in the UK, but MP Alicia Kearns wants to change that.

She said: "I strongly believe that we should all have the right to end our lives should we be suffering. I do not see assisted dying as speeding up death, but rather as shortening suffering.

"Since my election, I have spoken in several debates in favour of assisted dying, and I have been working alongside Rutlander Phil Newby, who took his case to the High Court to secure the right to an assisted death. Despite his suffering from Motor Neurones, sadly the High Court ruled that it was a matter for Parliament to change the law.

"Phil has recently taken part in an ITV documentary sharing his story about assisted dying, called 'A Time To Die'.

"It is heartbreaking that people like Phil are denied the right to end their suffering, and I will continue to do all I can to ensure the Government debates and votes on this law.

"It's certainly not an easy watch, but if you'd like to hear more about Phil's story and the right to assisted dying, the documentary is now available on ITVX."

You can watch the documentary online, or find out more about Dying in Dignity here.
