A Rutland pensioner has been defrauded out of £5,000 by scammers.

An 85-year-old Lyddington man and his wife were contacted last week by someone claiming to be a Scotland Yard police officer.

The callous phone caller said he was working on a case to trap a fraudster and required £7,000 from the couple to help.

The elderly man went to his bank to withdraw the cash but staff became suspicious and noticed that he had withdrawn £5,000 the day before. The poor man then revealed he had already paid that out to the bogus cop.

Thankfully, the second payment was not made and police are now investigating the fraud.
