Rutland: Police and crime Commissioner to appoint Melton Tory as new deputy
Leicester and Rutland's police and crime commissioner is planning to appoint a Melton Conservative as his deputy next week.
Rupert Matthews has put forward Charlotte Chirico for the £47,000 a year role, after his former deputy Rani Mahal stood down last month.
Chirico, who is a solicitor, has been involved in politics for several years, having stood as a Tory parliamentary candidate in London. She was also selected as the Conservative candidate for the Surrey police and crime commissioner elections in 2019 but quit before the 2021 election claiming there was a 'toxic' political environment in the county.
A confirmation hearing will take place at County Hall, Glenfield, Leicester on Monday (January 13), with her appointment expected to be approved by the panel.
Because it is a political appointment, Mr Matthews has not had to advertise or take applications for the role and has been able to choose his candidate.
Chirico is the communications officer for Melton and Syston Conservatives and chairs the association's women's group.
Her biography on the Melton and Syston Conservative Association website, says: "Melton born and bred, she prides herself on being a true Meltonian, with four generations of Melton in her family. Her great aunt had one of the first sweet-shops in Melton and her grandfather was a local farmer. Her great grandfather helped set up MenCap and Melton Swimming Baths. She is passionate about preserving the local community and Melton's unique history.
"Outside of politics, Charlie plays tennis, enjoys long hikes, beach walks, Leicester City Football Club, poker and cats."
