A Rutland resident has got in touch with Oakham Nub News hoping to warn others of a scam text tugging on the heart strings of concerned parents.

The unnamed Rutland resident received a text from an unfamiliar number explaining that 'her child' had lost their phone so to message them on a new number on WhatsApp.

Upon messaging the new number, the scammer, still pretending to be the child of the recipient, requests money to help with the newly purchased phone.

This time, the victim realised that there was something off and ceased communications with the unknown number, blocking them from further communications.

However, many have not been so savvy, and have transferred hundreds of pound to the scammer, believing that they are one of their own children in need of help.

The Rutland resident urged victims of this scam to call their children on their old, recognised phone number before sending money to anyone if they are uncertain.
