Rutland to commemorate VJ Day 80th Anniversary in Oakham, Uppingham and Cottesmore

Events across Rutland will take place on Friday 15th August in honour of the 80th anniversary of Victory over Japan (VJ Day).
Special commemorations will take place in Oakham, Uppingham and Cottesmore, recognising the day in 1945 when Japan surrendered to the Allied forces, effectively ending World War II.
According to the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, this anniversary of VJ Day 'is a moment to reflect on the immense human cost and to celebrate peace after six years of global warfare.
'In a county with strong connections to the Armed Forces, events across Rutland and the nation aim to educate younger generations and ensure the legacy of those who served is not forgotten.'
On Friday 15th August, there will be the opportunity for local people and veterans to reflect and pay homage to the brave souls who served and sacrificed during World War II. Events will be taking place in Oakham, Uppingham and Cottesmore.
In Oakham, there will be a Commemoration Ceremony and Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial outside All Saints' Church at 11.50am.
In Uppingham, there will be a Commemoration Ceremony and Act of Remembrance at the war memorial at St Peter and St Paul's Churchyard on London Road at 11am.
In Cottesmore, Rocks by Rail will be holding a special commemorative event alongside their 'Singapore' locomotive, remembering those who served in the Far-East. This event will commence at 1.30pm and everyone is welcome to attend but must contact the curator in advance to reserve a spot. This can be done by emailing [email protected] .
Speaking about the upcoming anniversary, Dr. Sarah Furness, Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland commented, 'On this special 80th anniversary of VJ Day, we remember the courage of those who fought in faraway jungles, skies, and seas, who endured the harshest conditions to secure peace for generations to come. Many never returned home, and those who did carried stories etched in silence. We honour their sacrifice, their resilience, and their legacy.
'Let us take this moment to thank them—not just with words, but with remembrance, reflection, and the promise to preserve their stories. Peace was won through their struggle, and it is our duty to protect it.'
