Rutland’s community transport scheme in urgent need of drivers

A charity which runs a community transport scheme in Rutland is in urgent need of drivers.
Voluntary Action Rutland (VAR) needs new drivers to come forward, after several long serving volunteers have stepped down.
The charity, which has been providing community transport for decades, says that it is facing a 'critical shortage' which could leave vulnerable people isolated.
The charity helps people without access to public transport attend medical appointments and also people to do their food shop and attend social activities.
Chief executive Tom Walters said: "We're proud of the difference our drivers make every day.
"But we urgently need more people to join our team. Even a few hours a month can have a huge impact. We will shortly be launching a Rapid Response team with volunteers looking to help to react to the increasing number of last-minute appointments that are coming through from hospitals."
Volunteer drivers use their own vehicles and receive mileage reimbursement. The charity says the role is flexible and allows volunteers to choose when and how often they drive.
No special qualifications are needed—just a valid driving licence, a friendly attitude, and a willingness to help.
Volunteer driver Peter said: "I've met some wonderful people and heard incredible stories.
"It's more than just giving someone a lift—it's about being part of a community."
VAR is asking anyone with spare time and a desire to make a difference to get in touch.
