With a rise in disabilities being recorded across the UK, the importance of local access to mobility services has never been more critical, and many local charities are feeling the need to step in and assist those who might not have access to support from the government.

Shopmobility Melton are a charity that offer mobility scooters for hire, for a day, weekend or longer at prices made affordable by their charity status.

The team are keen for their services to be utilised by more Oakham users, particularly since the struggles faced by Rutland Healthcare Support Shop, who announced a temporary closure and relocation in 2022. Read more here.

Shopmobility Coordinator Glyn, said: "Whilst most hirers are visiting Melton and are able to pick up and return the equipment to us it has not always been easy for a user from Oakham to benefit from our services.

"We would love to have a base in Oakham but at the moment that would be a big ask, so recent hirers have visited us in Melton and hired a bootable scooter that can be disassembled and taken away in the car. Larger scooters present us with a problem though."

If you need a scooter due to temporary or on-going mobility issues it would be best to contact Shopmobility Coordinator, Glyn on [email protected].

Glyn explained: "We do not sell scooters but if you are thinking of buying then it can be useful to get some experience of using them by hiring first - it can help avoid a costly mistake, and what's not to like for paying just £4 for a day hire?"
