Stamford and Rutland Amnesty International's Festival of Social Justice features talks on Peace-building and Modern Day Slavery this week

By The Editor 23rd May 2021

Stamford and Rutland Amnesty International's online Festival of Social Justice has begun and is running until 30th May.

There are a diverse and fascinating programme of free events hosted entirely online in collaboration with Stamford Arts Centre. Events are free, but booking is required in advance.

The Festival is open to all and features many exciting events, such as Stories and Poems from the New Wars at 8pm on Monday May 24 May from Cambridge University Peace and Education Research Group (CPERG).

Dr Hilary Cremin, senior lecturer at Cambridge University, and Roy Leighton FRSA , educator, author & peace activist, will explore how war and conflict is changing and how this affects arts-based peace-building work in and through education.

Dr Hilary Cremin and CPERG students Dr. Hogai Aryoubi, Nomisha Kurian and Will McInerny will share their powerful personal stories and poems about the conflict of belonging for diasporic communities, peace education and male violence.

Modern-Day Slavery: Hidden in Plain Sight at 7.30pm on 27th May features a collaboration with global non-profit organisation Hope For Justice. They will talk about the prevalence of slavery today; their involvement in the UK's largest trafficking case; and how you can spot the signs of modern-day slavery.

Secretary of Stamford and Rutland Amnesty International, Jane Andreae, said: "We are honoured to collaborate with these valued individuals and organisations who are also reaching out, like us, to try and support others locally or further afield.

"Even though Stamford and Rutland represent a relatively small area, this festival has global reach and is putting Stamford and Rutland's growing social justice movement on the map"
