A council has issued a temporary ban on household waste disposal at its recycling centres, as weather conditions continue to pile pressure on national processing capacity.

Neither of Rutland County Council's household waste recycling centres (HWRCs) will accept general household waste until further notice, but other recyclable materials including plastics, glass and metal are still eligible for disposal.

The ban comes after disruptions to the facilities that process waste from Rutland's HWRCs in Cottesmore and North Luffenham, largely as a result of fires and other "weather-related impacts".

"The issue is being caused by wider pressures across the UK's waste and recycling sector," a council spokesperson said. "A number of waste processing facilities have closed or reduced operations in recent weeks because of disruptions, including fires and weather-related impacts."

"This has significantly reduced disposal capacity across the country and affected many local authorities, which cannot empty household waste containers until processing plants are able to accept the materials."

The council's kerbside bin collection rounds will continue as usual, collecting household waste in conjunction with recyclable materials and garden waste.

The Met Office has issued an amber etreme heat warning covering Rutland for Thursday (August 13), which will continue to midnight, as temperatures reach 35°C.
