Rutland libraries are launching the children's space-themed Summer Reading Challenge 2019 this weekend - with the chance to win a signed copy of Major Tim Peake's book Ask an Astronaut.

The challenge invites four to 11-year-olds to borrow and read any six library books, with this year's Space Chase theme inspired by the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing.

Children will team up with futuristic family 'The Rockets' for an exciting space mission as they track down books nabbed by a mischievous band of aliens.

Youngsters taking part will receive special stickers, some with mysterious smells.

By adding these to their collectable mission folders, young readers will help the Rockets solve clues, dodge asteroids and discover the missing books, having lots of fun and adventures along the way.

To take part in Space Chase, all children need to do is sign up at their nearest library, where they will be given a collector folder to keep a record of their Summer Reading Challenge journey.

Councillor Lucy Stephenson, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure at Rutland County Council, said: "We set a new record for the Summer Reading Challenge last year, when more than 430 children took part from schools across Rutland.

"We think Space Chase will be equally popular this year and have some fantastic rewards for children as they read their books.

"Our top prize this year is a copy of Ask an Astronaut, signed by British astronaut Major Tim Peake.

"Every child that completes their six books gets a medal and certificate, which can be presented to them at school.

"The Summer Reading Challenge is always fantastic for our libraries and a fun way to encourage literacy and learning during the school holidays."

Space Chase launches on Saturday (13 July), with space-themed craft sessions from 10am to 12noon in all Rutland libraries, and runs until Saturday, 14 September.

A full programme of family events and activities are planned at Rutland libraries over the summer to celebrate the Summer Reading Challenge. This include a 'Space Day' on Friday 26 July, with crafts and a visit from performance poet Gez Walsh.
