Town council voices transport plan concerns

A town council has raised issues concerning a long-term transport plan with a county council.
Uppingham Town Council listed the raft of grievances regarding Rutland County Council's transport strategy in a document that was later shared with the county authority.
Uppingham Town Council denounced the plan as "Oakham-centric", alleging a bias towards the other major Rutland town.
Speaking at a meeting on Wednesday, October 7, Uppingham Town Councillor Ron Simpson described the plan entitled Moving Rutland Forward as "outrageous" adding "the range of developments are so pro Oakham that they marginalise Uppingham".
The document shared with Rutland County Council outlined major transport initiatives focused on Oakham, including active travel routes to Rutland Water and the arrival of a mobility hub in the town, while highlighting an absence of comparable schemes for Uppingham.
"Given Uppingham's role as Rutland's second market town, this imbalance risks widening disparities in accessibility, investment and transport resilience," the council said.
"We support the principles of Moving Rutland Forward but are concerned that the Implementation Plan does not adequately reflect the needs of Uppingham or the south-east of the county."
Other issues raised included future lorry traffic through Uppingham, commitments to bus service improvements and parking provisions.
Titled "Moving Rutland Forward", the plan was first signed off in 2019 as a framework by which transport matters in Rutland would be managed and informed until 2036.
The plan is undergoing an update to account for changes in national transport policy, as well as new challenges and priorities. Public consultation on the plan will remain open until Friday (October 16).
