Ukrainian children have been welcomed to Oakham Fire Station to find out more about the life of a local Firefighter.

In February 2022, Russia embarked upon a 'special military operation' in Ukraine, which has killed thousands and displaced millions.

This unrest has driven millions of Ukrainian people from their homes to seek refuge across Europe, with many Ukrainian families being housed in the UK.

Rutland is hosting a number of refugees, who have been welcomed by the community in daily life and at a range of events, from a 'One Year On' service in Stamford, to Oakham Rugby Club hosting a group at a pre-match meal.

Oakham Fire Station have also taken a role in welcoming Rutland Ukrainian guests, who recently enjoyed a day at the station learning about life as a Firefighter and participating in activities to educate and enjoy.

The team said: "Lots of fun was had by all, I think we enjoyed it more than the kids!"

One Ukrainian refugee and mother, added: "Today was a day filled with gratitude and excitement. Children from Ukraine had an amazing time thanks to the Oakham Fire Station team.

"We got to try on their uniforms, and even got to experience the thrill of squirting water from the hose.

"A big shoutout to our local heroes at Oakham Fire Station for making this day unforgettable for our little ones. Your support means the world to us, and we're so thankful for the smiles and memories you've brought to our kids' faces."

The team at Oakham Fire Station are also creating a Remembrance Garden this month, which they will be assembling on 31 October ahead of Remembrance Day.

They are in search of knitters and crocheters to help them out - find out how to get involved here.
