Following the official opening of Number 9 at Market Place on 4 July, Oakham's newest independent bakery hopes to connect with the community by serving up great local bakes, lunches and sweet treats.

Sharon Bradford and Rashni Fernando-Crolla have known each other over 10 years, working together under previous owner Curtis of Lincoln.

Following a surprise closure of Curtis, Sharon and Rashni weren't given any notice and had simply arrived at work to find the doors locked.

This led to Sharon and Rashni having a chat with the landlord, who has supported them in opening their own independent bakery.

Sharon has lived in Oakham her whole life and Rashni has for over 20 years, meaning both had a strong connection to the community, as well as an existing customer base.

The bakery opened on the 4th July, which is celebrated as Independence Day in America to emphasise the bakery's independent status.

The ribbon was officially cut by local MP Alicia Kearns, who said: 'Sharon and Rashni have saved this place and turned it into a wonderful local independent bakery and I am just so please with them because they have turned something around and they are giving back to our community.

'Local people creating local independent shops. We know you're going to have enormous success and I'm so excited.'

The bakery had customers queuing outside the door on opening day and hasn't been quiet since, with both previous and new customers supporting the business.

Speaking about the difference Number 9 has to Curtis, Sharon said: 'Now we're more flexible to meet what people are actually asking for.'

Previously, customers would come in regularly asking for items like crusty rolls that Curtis didn't offer but now Sharon and Rashni are running the bakery themselves, they are able to easily meet the needs of their customers.

Now, the bakery offers freshly cooked samosa, koftas and onion bhaji, alongside a mouth-watering selection of freshly baked breads, cakes and sweet treats.

They are also able to provide vegan, gluten and dairy free options, as well as freshly brewed coffee, hot and cold drinks and snacks.

There is also a lot of options in store for four-legged customers with the Paw-tissarie shelf stocking a variety of baked dog treats that look good enough to eat.

Additionally, Rashni is a brilliant home-baker and offers custom cakes for special occasions that can be delivered. There is also an option for Number 9 to cater parties, business meetings or any event that may require great local food.
