The ambulance involved in last night's (Mon) collision on the A606 in Whitwell was transporting a patient to hospital, according to East Midlands Ambulance Service.

The service's ambulance and two cars were involved in the incident just before 7pm.

Deborah Tweddle, Ambulance Operations Manager for Leicestershire, said: "An ambulance transporting a patient to hospital was involved in a road traffic collision with two cars at 6.56pm on 17 June on Main Road in Whitwell, near Oakham.

"We sent an incident commander, three paramedics in ambulance cars, four crewed ambulances and the air ambulance to the scene.

"One patient was taken to Queen's Medical Centre by air ambulance, three patients were taken to Queen's Medical Centre by land ambulance, one patient was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary by land ambulance and one patient was treated at the scene.

"The patient being transported to hospital when the collision occurred was taken to Peterborough City Hospital by land ambulance.

"The incident will be investigated by the police and it is therefore inappropriate to make any further comment at this time."

Earlier this morning a Leicestershire Police spokesman told Oakham Nub News that none of the six casualties are believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

The A606 was closed for more than six hours following the collision and reopened at 1.15am today (Tues).
