A one-way street system in a village is an "accident waiting to happen", according to a resident who lives nearby.

The one-way loop encircles a triangular "island" of houses in south west Uppingham, where North Street West and Leicester Road merge.

The resident, who has asked to remain anonymous, said some lines marking the one-directional flow of traffic have faded to such an extent that they are now almost illegible. They also highlighted a lack of signage to deter drivers from turning left down the one-way street off Leicester Road.

"The number of times that myself and my neighbours have heard screeching brakes and raised voices… we haven't yet heard the bang, but it's going to happen because it is a very popular route for Uppingham School kids in the morning. It's an accident waiting to happen.

"I do not want to be the one who finds my car has been hit, which has already nearly happened on a number of occasions," they said.

"I also don't want to be the one to pick up an Uppingham School child who has gone under the wheels of someone in the wrong place. It's a safety issue. Nothing else."

As the resident explained, they made attempts to raise the issue with the council at the end of last year, only to be told a highways inspector had found the signage and road markings acceptable.

Around this time, the resident sought to address the issue via the council's online FixMyStreet reporting service, as well as by contacting the highways team directly. However, no additional signs have yet been put up, nor has the "No Entry" road marking at the end of the street been relined.

The resident continued: "I have been told that the signage is adequate, but it simply doesn't exist where it should do. I think they have relined somewhere else around the corner, but not us. We need signs that clearly say no entry, and we need clearly defined lanes at the junction.

"The response of the council has been pathetic. It's not just me, I've not been elected by anyone, but I am fed up with the lack of cooperation and sensible answers from the council. Nothing has been done."

In response, a Rutland County Council spokesperson said: "A highways inspector attended the location and assessed the signage and markings. Following that inspection, the signage was considered to be adequate, and no immediate remedial works were identified as necessary.

"There are a number of lining schemes currently planned for Uppingham, including the reinstatement of markings in Stockerston Road by the school following a recent surfacing scheme, as well as relining at the junctions of Seaton Road with Brook Close, Ash Close and Hornbeam Lane, and work on High Street East. These works are currently scheduled to be undertaken by Thomas Bow during the week commencing 7 September.

"The council therefore considers that the FixMyStreet report was responded to appropriately, with an inspection carried out and the condition of the signage and markings assessed. The planned lining works will also ensure that identified areas of road markings are refreshed as part of the council's ongoing highways maintenance programme."
