Voluntary Action Rutland (VAR) will receive an uplift in funding from the Government as part of the Bus Service Operator Grant (BSOG)

This funding is part of a 60% nationwide increase in BSOG per mile cash for community transport organisations, significantly boosting revenue funding for local transport authorities across the country.

VAR operate a Social Car and Community Transport Scheme, providing a transport service for elderly, disabled and vulnerable residents in Rutland who experience difficulties travelling independently.

Under the Social Car Scheme, volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to pick up clients and return them to their homes.

Clients who use the service are expected to contribute toward the costs of their journey according to a set tariff. Minibuses and cars are available to hire from VAR, depending on the individual's needs.

Alicia Kearns, Member of Parliament for Rutland and Melton, said: "This grant uplift is wonderful news for Voluntary Action Rutland and our community transport services in Rutland.

"VAR's Social Car and Community Transport Scheme provides an essential service for vulnerable members of our communities, ensuring access to our market towns, medical appointments, and social activities, so that everyone remains connected no matter where they live.

"If you'd like to support our community, meet new people, and really make a difference to their lives through greater independence, VAR are always looking for new volunteer drivers, so don't hesitate to get in touch to see how you can get involved!"

This local transport funding comes on top of £9.6 billion in Government funding for the Midlands transport network.

Rutland will receive a share of a new £2.2 billion Midlands Local Integrated Transport Settlement to invest in local transport over a 7-year period, increased funding as part of the Bus Service Improvement Plan, and a share of the £2.2 billion Midlands Road Resurfacing Fund.
