Voluntary Action Rutland (VAR) Social Car Scheme is looking to recruit more volunteer drivers to assist with their door-to-door, Rutland-based service.

VAR, a community focused hub assisting the vulnerable, operate an extensive transport scheme for frail, elderly, disabled and vulnerable people in Rutland who have difficulty in travelling independently around the area covered by the Social Car Scheme.

This is a door-to-door service where volunteer drivers use their own vehicles to pick up clients and return them to their homes. The driver will wait for a reasonable time until the visit or appointment is over. Clients who travel with our transport scheme are expected to contribute toward the cost of their journey according to a set tariff.

Liberal Democrat Councillor with Rutland County Council, Raymond Payne, said: "I have had the great pleasure of being a driver for VAR for a number of years, and indeed plan to continue for a number more! I have always found the work very rewarding in that you met a lot of interesting people, get to see our lovely Rutland countryside in all its glory throughout the seasons, take part in an activity which is socially valuable, get a warm feeling of doing something useful and finally, if you are a married man, get out from under the other halves feet for a few hours!"

The work is unpaid but petrol expenses are covered so that volunteers are never out of pocket.

Potential volunteers should contact Jim on 01572 725485 Monday to Friday 09.00-13.00 for further details.

Volunteers can do as many days as they like.
