Ahead of the installation of the controversial statue of the late Queen Elizabeth II, CCTV cameras have been installed to the rear of Oakham Library, keeping a watchful eye over the soon-to-be site of the county's new attraction.
As part of a larger CCTV installation within the DWP office located in the Rutland County Library, cameras have been positioned to monitor the bronze tribute to the late monarch.
This security measure comes as the unveiling of the statue has been anticipated for April 2024.
While no member of the Royal Family is currently available to attend the ceremony, there is expected to be a public unveiling of the statue.
Corgi owners, in particular, have been encouraged to attend, adding a touch of playfulness to the occasion, which is a momentous one for the county - despite controversy surrounding the installation of the statue.
The CCTV installation serves a dual purpose. Primarily, it ensures the safety and security of the statue, a valuable public monument and symbol of respect for the late Queen. Additionally, the cameras potentially deter acts of vandalism or disrespect, allowing authorities to swiftly respond to any incidents.
While some have raised concerns about the cost of the statue, many have welcomed the new addition, which has primarily been funded by private donations. One public donation was made, to the tune of £5,000, by Oakham Town Council - who also look ready to pick up the maintenance and lighting costs for the statue.
With the date of the statue's unveiling approaching, the new Queen Elizabeth II monument in Oakham is a testament to the fondness, from many members of the community, for the late monarch. .
