The Met Office has updated the weather warning in place for Rutland from yellow to amber, predicting heavy snow causing disruption and dangerous travelling conditions.

The weather warning, which is in place from 8pm today (Thursday 8 January) to 9am Friday morning, covers the East and West Midlands.

Rutland County Council said: 'Rain from Storm Goretti will turn readily to heavy snow on Thursday evening, before easing through the course of Friday morning.

'Accumulations of 10-15cm are likely across affected areas, with the potential for 20-30cm in some locations, mainly over higher ground.

'It is safer to not drive in these conditions. If you must drive, take care: use dipped headlights, accelerate gently, keep a safe distance from other vehicles and reduce your speed to avoid sudden breaking.'
